On the evening of November 12, 2019, an academic lecture on "Advanced Manufacturing Technologies in Architecture" was held in the semi-circle lecture hall of school of architecture, Chang'an University (Xiaozhai Campus). Professor Mahesh Daas, President of The Boston Architectural College, was invited to give a talk. The lecture was hosted by Yu Xiaohui, Assistant Dean of the school. Liu Ming acted as the interpreter of the lecture. Teachers and students of the School of Architecture, as well as students from other relevant schools attended the lecture.

At the beginning of the lecture, Yu Xiaohui, Assistant Dean of the school, introduced Professor Daas’ expertise and professional experience to students. The lecture is divided into four parts: “BEING, MAKING, THINKING, BECOMING”.

Professor Daas firstly introduced today's robotics to students through three classification methods: Interaction, Process, Robotic Architecture. Then, he talked about how to use robotics for building construction. A large number of cases was used to show the accuracy and efficiency of robotics. Finally, Professor Daas discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on the future human society.

 Professor Daas’ Talk

At the lecture, the students discussed with Professor Daas on "Whether robotics will replace human designers’ work”, “what kind of materials should be used in making architecture with robots”, “how robots are used in the design research process”, and “VR Vs. AR ", etc. The lecture made the students deeply inspired by the application and development of advanced manufacturing technologies in architecture.

Mahesh Daas is a designer, a technologist with expertise in robotics, and an experienced academic leader who chronicled the presidential leadership of former MIT president Charles M. Vest. His career spans 23 years at four universities including 14 years in higher education leadership roles. Most recently, he served as dean of the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.

In 2011, Daas was elevated as an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor, the highest national recognition for an architectural educator. He was recognized for contributions to design computing with the 2013 Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) Society Award of Excellence. ACADIA elected him twice as its president and he served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Architectural Computing and currently serves on the editorial board of Construction Robotics Journal. Daas is also the author of Leading with Aesthetics: The Transformational Leadership of President Charles M. Vest at M.I.T. (Lexington Books, 2015 & 2019) and Towards a Robotic Architecture (Oro Editions 2018).
