The School of Architecture was established in December 1979. Its predecessor was the Department of Architecture of the Northwest Institute of Architecture & Engineering. The School of Architecture, Chang'an University, was formed in 2000 by the former Department of Architecture of the Northwest Institute of Architecture & Engineering, and the former College of Architecture & Engineering of the University of Highway and Transportation.

In December 1979, the Department of Architecture of the Northwest Institute of Architecture & Engineering was established.

In 1980, the undergraduate program in Urban and Rural Planning was set up for the first time in the school.

In 1981, the undergraduate program in Architecture was set up for the first time in the school.

In 1993, the undergraduate program in Architecture changed to 5-year program.

In 1999, the undergraduate program in Urban and Rural Planning changed to 5-year program.

In 2001, the undergraduate program in Environmental Art Design was set up for the first time in the school.

In 2003, the School got a second-level master's degree program in Urban Planning and Design.

In 2004, the School of Architecture began recruiting graduate students.

In 2005, the School got a second-level master's degree program in Architectural Design & Theory.

In 2005, the School got a second-level master's degree program in Building Science.

In 2009, the School got a first-level master's degree program in Architecture.

In 2011, the School got three first-level master's degree programs in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning and Landscape Architecture.

In 2013, a second-level doctoral program in Urban and Rural Human Settlement Environment Construction Engineering was set up for the first time in the school.

In May 2015, Urban and Rural Planning (5-year undergraduate program) was accredited for 4 years from the national educational program. (2015.05-2019.05)

In May 2018, both B.Arch. (5-year) and M.Arch programs passed the National Architecture Education Accreditation and were accredited for 4 years. (2018.05-2022.05)

After more than 30 years of hard work, the School of Architecture now has a strong team of faculty members, who are responsible for cultivating high-level architects, urban designers and landscape architects for the country.

The School of Architecture consists of three departments (Department of Architecture, Department of Urban and Rural Planning, Department of Environmental Art Design), one Laboratory Center (Building Physics Laboratory, Urban and Rural Planning Information Technology Laboratory, Visual Modeling Laboratory, Architectural History Experimental Research Center, Digital Building Laboratory), and Chang'an University Human Settlements & Building Energy Efficiency Laboratory (Human Settlements & Building Energy Efficiency Laboratory, Energy-saving Building Technology Research Center). In addition, it includes Chang'an University Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, Chang'an University Architecture Design & Research Institute, as well as some research-oriented institutes, such as Urban Research Institute, Institute of Architectural Acoustics and Optics, Human Settlements Institute, Institute of Historic Cultural Cities Conservation, and Institute of Human Settlements & Building Energy Efficiency.

Since our establishment in 1979, the School of Architecture has excelled in offering a solid foundation for success for all of our graduates. It is a place where practitioners are created, and where the role of the architect, landscape architect, urban designer, theorist, historian, and technology and science specialist is redefined.
