On 16th October 2023, from 7pm to 9pm, at the invitation of the School of Architecture of Chang'an University, the Xi'an Research Base of China-Portugal Joint Laboratory for Cultural Heritage Conservation Science, and the Xi'an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base "Xi'an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Technological Innovation in Green Urban-Rural and Territorial Space Intelligence". Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN, dean of the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, registered architect of Germany, founding member and academic advisor of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design, gave an academic lecture titled "Public Space Trends in Hong Kong" in the second lecture theatre of the Service Hall of the North Campus of Chang'an University. Prof. Hou Quanhua, dean of the School of Architecture, Dr Zhang Yiwei, researcher of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and more than 160 teachers and students of the School of Architecture attended the lecture, which was hosted by Tan Jingbin, associate professor of the Department of Urban and Rural Planning of the School of Architecture.
Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN's lecture focused on the development of public space in Hong Kong. Firstly, he shared the importance of public space and pointed out that public space will have a greater influence on people's activities in the present special context. Then he took Hong Kong as an example to illustrate the importance of public space in high-density cities in Asia, starting from the strong demand for public space in terms of leisure and recreation, social development, and economic activities, etc. Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN also explained how public space can be transformed from a bland space to an attractive one through urban design, taking into account the 6+1 basic forms of public space. He explained how public space can be transformed from an ordinary to a desirable space through urban design. Finally, Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN introduced in detail the basic steps for designing urban public space in Hong Kong by applying the community participatory planning approach.

After the presentation, the teachers and students responded positively and asked questions enthusiastically, Prof. Hendrik TIEBEN gave in-depth answers to each question and useful discussions, answering questions and inspiring ideas for students.
